How to wrap

  1. 01Dress the abaya or kurta first. Judge the scarf against the neckline you are actually wearing. A high neck wants a shorter fall. An open neck wants the cloth closer at the throat. Do not measure the drape over a T-shirt and expect it to match later.
  2. 02Choose an undercap close to the scarf or to your skin tone. Velvet satin leans opaque, so the cap is for the hairline in photographs. Malaysian chiffon needs the cap for coverage. A Türkiye scarf sits between semi-opaque and opaque depending on the layers. Keep the cap on for a bright courtyard and for phone flash.
  3. 03If you are wearing velvet satin, place the centre of one long edge on your forehead, slightly forward, so the hairline stays covered when you lean in to greet someone. Even the two tails in the mirror before you pin.
  4. 04Bring the right tail under the chin and pin it high, near the left ear at the upper neck, not down on the chest. A higher pin frames the face for group photographs and keeps the neck from looking bulky. Catch the under-layer so the pin does not float on a single sheet of cloth.
  5. 05Take the left tail, draw it once loosely across the front, and let it fall. Leave it about a hand longer than you would for an office tuck. Eid visits mean sitting, eating, and greeting. A soft fall moves with you. Do not build a padded crown.
